The ruins of Engelbourg Castle

Perched on a hill overlooking Thann, the Château de l’Engelbourg, also known as “the witch’s eye”, is an emblematic ruin of the town.
Built in the 13th century to guard the entrance to the Thur valley, the castle was dismantled by order of Louis XIV in the 17th century.

Today, the ruins offer a pleasant walk for families and history buffs alike.
The ascent is quick and easy, accessible to all, and reveals the remains of the castle as well as a breathtaking view over the town of Thann and the surrounding valley.

The nickname “Witch’s Eye” comes from a huge circular piece of the collapsed tower, left balanced on the hill.
It looks like a gigantic eye watching over the city.
The rock attracts many curious visitors and photography enthusiasts.
